Scripture

(Matthew 13: 22 -23)

When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there, returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meeting house. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “We’ve known him since he was a kid; he’s the carpenter’s son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas. All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?” They got their noses all out of joint.

Primary Daily Prayer

Young Ignatius dreamed of glory: brave knights and action-packed battles. When he was old enough, he joined an army, only to be struck by a cannonball. While recovering in the hospital, the young soldier read about the lives of the saints who followed Jesus. Ignatius wanted to help others follow Jesus too. He wrote the Spiritual Exercises, which are ways we can pray and meditate to grow closer to God. With some friends, Ignatius founded a religious order called the Society of Jesus. Now Ignatius dreamed of a different kind of glory. In fact, it’s the motto of the Society of Jesus: “For the greater glory of God”.

Generous God, teach me to be generous. Amen.

Secondary Daily Prayer

God of ordinary people, lead us to grow in your image and become more fully human. Lead us to respect and value all other people that we may work together for justice for all and the building of your kingdom. Amen.

Staff Daily Prayer

Teller of parables, we need to learn in order to teach, but teach us by your tantalising parables, that our imaginations may be stretched wide, and we will tell new parables as well as old ones. Amen.
