The Gospel

Matthew 5: 1 – 2, 9

When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds. he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions. This is what he said, “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.”

… On the way to Mass

In what ways are you blessed by God?

On the way home from Mass …

Which Beatitude do you find most challenging? Why do you think it is hard?

The Prayer

For the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, and the peacemakers … May God’s will be done.

For the rich and powerful to see God’s reality and love as a path to liberation … May God’s will be done.

For those who have given up hope that liberation, change and transformation are possible in this world … May God’s will be done.

The Question of the Week

Staff/Parents
Do you believe everyone is welcome in the reign of God? Why or why not?

Secondary Students (based on ‘The Connection’ taken from ‘Equipped!’ in ‘Sunday Gospel’)
Which Beatitude seems the riskiest for you to live? Which seems the easiest?

Primary Students
Who is welcome in the reign of God? Who would you like to tell about the reign of God?

The Action

Do you have companionship to share with the lonely? Do you have comfort to share with the sorrowful? Do you have goods to share with the poor? Do you have time to share with the neglected? Count the advantages you have in worldly standards. How do you put them at the service of the disadvantaged?
