Scripture

(Matthew 13: 16 – 17)

Jesus continued, “God’s kingdom is like a fishnet cast into the sea, catching all kinds of fish. When it is full, it is hauled onto the beach. The good fish are picked out and put in a tub; those unfit to eat are thrown away”.

… Jesus asked, “Are you starting to get a handle on all this?” They answered, “Yes”.

Primary Daily Prayer

Another of Jesus’ parables – and what a beautiful one this is! Think of someone gathering fish and sea creatures of all kinds – tiny starfish, colourful seahorses, gigantic swordfish and many more. Imagine God gathering all the people from all over the earth: tall, short, rich, poor, sick, well, old, young, saints and sinners. Jesus tells us that at the end of time, God will separate those who follow God’s commandments from those who do not. Notice that Jesus says this separating is God’s job, not ours. Our job is to get along “swimmingly” with all of God’s people and love as God loves.

Jesus, brother and friend, teach me to love all of God’s people. Amen.

Secondary Daily Prayer

God living among us, there is so much that I don’t know, and I ask you to inspire me with a thirst for knowledge. I pray, too, for wisdom and understanding that I may use my knowledge well. I give thanks for many people I have never met whose knowledge and understanding have been passed onto me. I ask that I may benefit from their work and experience and may contribute, in turn, to the wellbeing of others. Amen.

Staff Daily Prayer

God of ferment, God of life, as I recall the night’s unsettled dreams … as I foresee the day’s demands … come to me in the desires of my heart, in the anger of the excluded, in all I might discount – until I find you everywhere, until your holy love leavens every impulse, for I pray in the name of Jesus, whose surprising call continues. Amen.
