Prayer of the Day

1789
George Washington is elected the first United States President. Three years later on this day he was re-elected to a second term.
We pause to recognise the First Peoples of this land, whose story and spirit continue to shape this place. We honour their deep relationship with Country and the wisdom passed down through the generations. As we share this land today, may we act with gratitude, humility and respect.
Lord bless me on this day, guide me in your way,
calm my mind to be, let my eyes now see.
Surround me, surround me, surround me with your love.

Jesus left there and returned to his hometown. His disciples came along. On the Sabbath, he gave a lecture in the meeting place. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?”
Imagine if someone who hadn’t seen you in a few years saw you now. Would they be surprised at how much you’ve changed and grown? Probably. That’s a little like what happens in today’s Gospel when Jesus goes back to his hometown. People only know him as the son of Mary and Joseph. They know him as a carpenter. Hearing his words, they can’t open their hearts to see that he is a great teacher who speaks the truth they need to hear. These are people who have known Jesus for longer than anyone, and yet, they can’t recognise who he is – the Son of God.
Jesus, help us recognise you in everyone we meet.

God of boldness, you remind us that even when people doubt us, you can still work through us. Give us courage to speak, act, and stand up for what is right, even when others question or laugh. Challenge us to trust you and step out anyway, knowing you can do amazing things through us. Amen.

God, you show us that doubt and familiarity do not limit your work. Grant us confidence to teach, guide, and challenge our students, even when our efforts go unseen or questioned. Help us trust that through our dedication, your presence can spark growth and transformation. Amen.

Rise up! (rise up!) Go out! (go out) Go now to the world.
Go out to all lands, be my voice, be my hands.
Rise up! (rise up!) Go out! (go out) Go now, live in peace,
I send you, my people my friends.
