Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

John 2: 13 – 14

When the Passover Feast, celebrated each spring by the Jews, was about to take place, Jesus travelled up to Jerusalem. He found the Temple teeming with people selling cattle and sheep and doves. The loan sharks were also there in full strength.

John gives us the striking scene of Jesus entering the Temple and driving out the money changers. His passion is unmistakable. “Take all this out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!” This moment is not one of quiet reflection but of deep conviction and righteous energy. On this feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, we are reminded that our faith is not confined to bricks and mortar. It lives within us and among us.

The Lateran Basilica in Rome is the Pope’s own cathedral and the mother church of all Christian churches. It stands as a symbol of unity and renewal, reminding us that the Church is not simply a building but the people who gather in Christ’s name. When we celebrate this feast, we are not celebrating a structure. We are celebrating the living Church – us.

As educators in Australian Catholic schools, we too are builders and caretakers of sacred spaces. Every classroom, every playground, every hallway has the potential to be a living temple of faith, hope and love. When Jesus speaks of the Temple being rebuilt in three days, he is speaking of his body. Today, that body continues through his people, through us, through the young hearts we teach and form.

This Gospel challenges us to ask: What is sacred in our schools? What have we allowed to clutter our sacred spaces, perhaps not with coins and cattle, but with distractions, stress or cynicism? Jesus calls us to clear away anything that prevents authentic encounter with him. Our mission is to create spaces where faith is alive and learning is filled with purpose and joy.

Let the energy of Jesus in the Temple inspire us to act with conviction. Teach boldly. Love deeply. Nurture wonder. Challenge injustice. Be courageous in faith. The work you do each day is nothing less than sacred building, forming living temples of the Holy Spirit in your students.

This week, as we honour the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, may we rededicate ourselves to our vocation. Let us see every lesson, every conversation and every act of care as a brick laid in the living Church.

Walk into your classroom today and see it as holy ground. Treat every student as a sacred encounter. Bring the same passion Jesus showed in the Temple to your teaching and leadership. Build up the Body of Christ with creativity, compassion and joy.

For when we teach with love, we dedicate not just a building, but the very heart of the Church, alive in our schools, alive in our students, alive in us.
