Second Advent

Matthew 3: 1 – 2

While Jesus was living in the Galilean hills, John, called “the Baptiser,” was preaching in the desert country of Judea. His message was simple and austere, like his desert surroundings: “Change your life. God’s kingdom is here.”

In this second week of Advent the Gospel introduces us to John the Baptist standing in the wilderness proclaiming Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. His words echo across centuries inviting every listener to pause reflect and prepare. For educators in Catholic schools this invitation is not abstract. It speaks directly to the daily work of shaping minds and forming hearts amid the noise and pressures that surround our students.

Advent reminds us that preparation is holy work. John’s voice urges us to clear the clutter that keeps us from seeing God’s presence. In the classroom this can mean examining our habits our expectations and even our pace. Do we allow enough room for silence, wonder, and prayer or do we rush from task to task forgetting that formation happens most deeply in the quiet moments between lessons. Do we model repentance by showing humility when we fall short or by repairing relationships when there has been misunderstanding. Our witness teaches as powerfully as any curriculum.

As the Advent candles grow brighter each week we are reminded that light expands slowly but steadily. In the same way our influence as teachers often unfolds in small yet meaningful ways. A listening ear offered to a discouraged student. A word of encouragement given at the right moment. A decision to uphold justice compassion and truth even when doing so is inconvenient. These simple choices prepare a path for Christ to enter not only our hearts but the hearts of those entrusted to our care.

This season also invites us to name the wildernesses our students may be walking through. Some carry unseen burdens. Others struggle to believe in their own dignity or worth. John’s proclamation becomes our mission to help them see that God’s kingdom is not distant. It is near. It is present in mercy freely given in forgiveness extended and in communities shaped by love.

So let this week of Advent become more than a countdown to Christmas. Let it be a turning of the heart. Choose one intentional practice that will bring Christ’s light into your classroom or school community. Begin each class with a moment of prayerful quiet. Offer a sincere apology where it is needed. Reach out to a student who often goes unnoticed. Infuse your lessons with hope that challenges cynicism and strengthens faith.

John the Baptist reminds us that preparation is not passive. It is a courageous willingness to clear a path for God to move. As educators you stand in a sacred place where preparation can flourish. Step boldly into this mission and help your students encounter the God who draws near.
