Third Easter

Luke 24: 30 – 31

Jesus sat down at the table with them. Taking the bread, he blessed and broke and gave it to them. At that moment, open-eyed, wide-eyed, they recognised him. And then he disappeared.

As educators in Catholic schools, we often walk with our students through moments of confusion, doubt, and discovery. The story of the road to Emmaus speaks directly to this journey. Imagine two disciples walking, hearts heavy, trying to make sense of a world that seemed shattered by loss. They were joined by a stranger who listened, who walked alongside them, and at the breaking of the bread, their eyes were opened and they recognised him.

In many ways, our classrooms are our Emmaus roads. Students come to us with questions, uncertainties, and the weight of their own experiences. They may not always recognize the presence of God in their lives or even understand what they are searching for. Our role is not always to have all the answers but to walk with them, to listen, and to create moments where understanding and insight can unfold naturally. Sometimes the learning happens in a lesson, sometimes in a shared conversation, and often in the small, seemingly ordinary moments when a student feels seen and heard.

This Easter season reminds us that recognition and transformation often come through simple, humble acts. Just as the disciples’ hearts burned as they listened and shared, our students’ hearts can ignite when they experience patience, attention, and care. In our schools, we break the bread of knowledge and faith daily, and in these moments, the presence of Christ is revealed. Being present, walking alongside, and nurturing understanding allows our students to recognize the sacred in their everyday lives and in themselves.

Let this Easter season inspire us to be attentive guides on the roads our students travel, remembering that revelation often comes not through grand gestures but through the ordinary, faithful accompaniment that opens eyes, warms hearts, and transforms lives.
