Matthew 28: 19 – 20

Jesus said to the disciples, “Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

Cheryl liked to make things. At school she was much more interested in woodworking class or the machine shop than she was in the things that attracted the attention of some of the other girls. As you might guess, she didn’t get a lot of encouragement from the boys. They didn’t want her invading what they considered to be their domain. The other girls weren’t very supportive either; they thought she was a little weird.

But her dad was a great source of hope for Cheryl. Larry was a machinist himself and ran a small tool and die shop in town. He understood Cheryl’s love of the craft and would occasionally bring her into the shop with him and show her how all the machines worked.

Cheryl was in her glory in the shop. The men and women working the machines liked her and showed her the things they were making. Her dad would sometimes even give her a little job making something on one of the machines. Nobody thought she was weird. Instead, she felt special that she shared a common vocation with all the machinists. Of course it helped that she was the boss’s daughter.

Our friends may think we’re a little weird sometimes for being so otherworldly. But we know that we’re special because we share with Jesus Christ the inheritance of God’s kingdom. Of course it helps, too, that we are sons and daughters of the Boss!
