Twelfth Ordinary

Matthew 10: 30 – 31

Jesus continued, “God pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail – even numbering the hairs on your head! You’re worth more than a million canaries.”

Jesus offers a profound reminder: “Not one sparrow falls to the ground outside God’s care … So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

For those working in Catholic schools, these words challenge us to see beyond the routines, deadlines and demands that often fill our days. Every student who walks through our gates is known, loved and valued by God. The child who excels academically, the student who struggles quietly, the young person who tests our patience, and the one who feels invisible all share the same God given dignity.

This Gospel invites us to reflect on how we see those entrusted to our care. Do we notice the student who sits alone at recess? Do we take time to listen when a colleague is carrying a hidden burden? Do our words and actions communicate that people are valued not because of what they achieve, but because of who they are?

In a culture that often measures worth through performance, success and popularity, Catholic education is called to offer a different message. We proclaim through our relationships that every person matters. Every interaction becomes an opportunity to reveal something of God’s love.

Perhaps the greatest challenge of this Gospel is not simply believing that God cares for our students and colleagues. It is believing that God cares for us with the same attention and tenderness. In busy and demanding school communities, we can forget that we too are seen, known and cherished.

As we continue our work this week, may we remember that the mission of Catholic education begins with recognising the value God places on every person. In God’s eyes, no one is overlooked, no one is insignificant and no one is forgotten.
