Twenty-second Ordinary

Matthew 16: 24

Then Jesus went to town on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how.

“Take up your cross and follow me.”

It is one of Jesus’ most challenging invitations. It is also one that can sound strangely familiar to anyone working in a Catholic school. Because education is never simply a job. It is a daily decision to show up, lean in, keep caring and keep believing in young people, even when the day is demanding and the easy option is to switch off.

Following Jesus is not about carrying unnecessary burdens or making life harder than it needs to be. It is about choosing what matters. Choosing courage when silence would be easier. Choosing inclusion when exclusion is more convenient. Choosing patience when frustration is rising. Choosing justice when it costs us something.

In a Catholic school, those choices are where mission becomes real.

Every conversation, every classroom, every playground interaction, every email and every moment of encouragement can communicate something about the kind of community we are creating. Our students are watching more than what we teach. They are watching how we respond when things get difficult.

So perhaps the challenge is simple: What will you choose today?

Choose the response that builds people up. Choose the action that creates belonging. Choose the courage to keep going. Choose the way of Jesus.

Because sometimes the most powerful act of faith is simply choosing, again, to live the mission.
